Story From the Field: Giving Witness

Not sure exactly how to write this – let’s see how it goes. Each visit I make to a 75 yo client leaves a profound imprint on my heart. Yes, I am helping her downsize out of the home where she raised her kids, lost her first husband and grew older but the work goes beyond decluttering and organizing.

I am giving witness to someone’s life. I am listening to stories that emerge out of objects, paper, pictures and more. I am honoring the energy that the stuff transmits so that the objects can move on and out and the memories can remain. I am validating someone’s life as an actor, mother and partner and it is profound for both of is. Over the two hours we work together I am right by my client’s side sharing emotions, frustrations, wonder and pride. I am strict, loving, in tears and deeply grateful for this work.
